Simple Audio Capture is a Chrome extension that records audio from any browser tab and saves it as an MP3 file. No microphone needed, no cloud uploads, no accounts — just click record and you’re done.
Most audio recording tools are bloated, confusing, or want to upload your data somewhere. Simple Audio Capture was built to do one thing well: capture tab audio and save it locally. Your audio never leaves your computer.
The extension uses the Chrome Tab Capture API to grab the audio stream from your active tab. It encodes the audio to MP3 in real time using the open-source lamejs library in an offscreen document, so recording doesn’t slow down your browser. When you stop recording, the MP3 file downloads to your computer instantly — no waiting.
The extension is free to use with 128 and 192 kbps quality and recordings up to 30 minutes. An optional Pro upgrade ($9.99 one-time) unlocks 320 kbps studio quality and unlimited recording time.
Simple Audio Capture was built by Duncan Rawlinson, a photographer and technologist based in Canada. It started as a personal tool and grew into something worth sharing.
The extension collects zero personal data. No analytics inside the extension, no tracking, no accounts. All recording and encoding runs locally in your browser.
