Overview

Simple Audio Capture is a browser extension that records audio from your active browser tab and saves it as an MP3 file to your computer. It is designed with privacy as a core principle.

Data Collection

Simple Audio Capture does not collect, store, transmit, or share any user data.

• No personal information is collected.
• No analytics or tracking of any kind.
• No network requests are made — the extension works entirely offline.
• No data is sent to any server, third party, or external service.

Tab Audio Capture

The extension uses Chrome’s tabCapture API to access audio from the currently active browser tab when you explicitly click the “Start Recording” button. This audio is:

• Encoded to MP3 format in real time, entirely within your browser.
• Saved as a file to your local Downloads folder when you click “Stop & Save.”
• Never transmitted over the network or stored anywhere other than your computer.

Audio capture only occurs while you are actively recording. The extension cannot and does not capture audio in the background or without your explicit action.

Permissions

The extension requests the following permissions, each used solely for its core recording functionality:

• tabCapture — To access the audio stream from the active tab.
• activeTab — To identify which tab to capture audio from.
• offscreen — To create a background document for audio processing (required by Chrome’s Manifest V3 architecture).
• downloads — To save the recorded MP3 file to your Downloads folder.
• storage — To remember whether a recording is in progress (session only, cleared when the browser closes).

Third-Party Services

This extension does not use any third-party services, APIs, or SDKs. The MP3 encoding is performed locally using the open-source lamejs library bundled within the extension.
